Nursing/Medical Assistant 


Functions as a nursing assistant to University Surgical Associates with primary responsibility to the providers and the Clinical Nurse Manager. Primarily responsible for rooming patients and ensuring necessary medical documentation is entered into the electronic health record, while maintaining exam rooms, sterilizing instruments and assisting with office surgical procedures. Works in conjunction with other secretarial staff ensuring smooth patient flow. Knowledge of sterile technique, OSHA regulations, standards and the routine in a surgical office setting is vital, and expert handling of patient issues and patient confidentiality is essential. Experience with electronic medical records preferred

Essential Functions

  • Preparing examination rooms for physician needs during office hours while maintaining proper cleaning, upkeep and stocking of supplies in assigned examination rooms   
  • Proper handling, cleaning and disposal of all contaminated instruments and/or materials

    as mandated by OSHA

  • Organizing minor surgical kits and assisting Physicians with minor surgical procedures when needed

  • Obtaining and properly documenting in the electronic medical record the patient’s vital signs, past medical, social and surgical history, allergies and medications

  • Reviewing patient forms to ensure they are complete and assist patients with completion of the forms if indicated

  • Ensuring continuity of physicians’ schedules

  • Proper labeling and handling of all surgical specimens. Delivery of specimens to the pathology lab

  • Assisting secretarial staff with other duties as necessary in maintaining efficiency in all office responsibilities

  • Making Post Hospital Discharge follow-up phone calls

  • Responsible for any other duties, clinical or administrative, as may be assigned by the clinical office manager

  Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Degree from an accredited technical school or certification as a medical assistant
  • 2-3 years of relevant surgical technical support either in a hospital or office setting
  • Medical terminology knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of Universal Precautions as well as proper use of personal protective equipment

  • Ability to represent the organization and serve consumers in a professional manner and promote a positive image of the organization and its services

  • Mental and sensory abilities to read process and interpret medical/surgical data

  • Computer literate with basic knowledge of medical software and data entry

  • This position requires long periods of standing and transportation in order to travel to satellite offices

  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, lift, push/pull up to 25 lbs, stoop, walk, reach, and move intermittently during working hours
